CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Thursday, June 1st

SUNLIGHT DANCED THROUGH the leafy trees lining Main Street, casting a warm, golden glow over the quaint shops and bustling restaurant patios. I walked hand-in-hand with Jake, the gentle breeze ruffling my hair as we strolled past familiar storefronts, enjoying the momentary escape from the intensity of our investigation.

“Look at that,” Jake said, pointing toward a bakery with its window display of freshly baked pastries. “I think I can smell those croissants from here.”

I laughed, the sound light and carefree. “If we stop for pastries now, we’ll never make it to our next lead.”

“True,” he conceded, though I could see the playful glint in his blue eyes. “But a quick detour wouldn’t hurt anyone, right?”

Before I could respond, my gaze was drawn to Planks & Cranks Hardware across the street. A flicker of recognition washed over me as I spotted Kyle Fisher rifling through shelves of tools inside. My heart sank slightly, he had been on our list of suspects for some time now, and this felt like an opportunity too good to pass up.

I exchanged a knowing look with Jake, who immediately understood my intention.

“Let’s go,” I said, my tone shifting from playful to focused.

As we crossed the street and stepped inside the hardware store, the scent of sawdust and metal filled my nostrils. The store was small but well-stocked. Rows of tools lined the walls while hardware supplies filled every nook and cranny.

Kyle looked up in surprise when he noticed us approaching. He forced a polite smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes.

“Hey,” he greeted us awkwardly as he clutched a hammer in one hand.

“Hey Kyle,” I replied casually, trying to maintain an air of friendliness despite the tension crackling between us. “We just wanted to check in on you.”

“Yeah? What’s up?” His voice held a note of wariness as he shifted his weight from one foot to another.

I wasted no time in bringing up recent events. “Have you seen Annabelle this week?”

Kyle’s expression tightened slightly at the mention of Annabelle’s name. He shrugged dismissively, downplaying their interactions since their breakup.

“Not really,” he replied curtly. “Just a few texts here and there.”

Jake leaned forward slightly, probing deeper into Kyle’s demeanor. “You two were so close before everything went south. You don’t care about her anymore?”

Kyle laughed bitterly, tightening his grip around the hammer as if it were a lifeline.

“Moved on,” he insisted defiantly but with an edge that suggested otherwise.

“So she is just a chapter in your past?” Jake pressed gently.

Kyle met Jake's gaze for a moment before looking away, his jaw tightened slightly as if trying to mask whatever emotions churned beneath the surface.

“I don’t see what business it is of yours,” he replied defensively, attempting to brush off our questions as if they were insignificant.

“Just trying to understand how you’re feeling about everything,” I interjected carefully while studying him closely, searching for any cracks in his facade that might reveal more than what he was willing to share.
